Which Coffee Grind Should I Choose?
The right coffee grind starts with the brewer you use. Wrench & Grind offers Whole Bean, Standard, Coarse, and Espresso on many bagged coffees, but the available options vary by product. Check the choices on the product page before ordering.
Start with your coffee maker
- Automatic drip coffee maker: Standard is our everyday drip option.
- French press: Coarse is a practical starting point. If the coffee you want does not offer Coarse, choose Whole Bean and grind it to suit your press.
- Cold brew: Choose Coarse or grind Whole Bean to match your cold-brew brewer's instructions.
- Espresso machine: Espresso is our pre-ground espresso option. Whole Bean gives you the flexibility to adjust the grind for your machine and basket.
- Pour-over, moka pot, or another brewer: Follow your equipment's grind guidance. Whole Bean lets you make the adjustments your setup needs.
Whole bean or pre-ground?
Choose Whole Bean if you have a suitable grinder and want control over grind size. It is especially useful when changing espresso settings or moving between brewing methods.
Choose a pre-ground option when convenience matters or you do not have a grinder. Match the selection to your brewer rather than choosing by roast level: a dark roast still needs the right grind for the way you brew it.
Why one grind does not fit every brewer
Espresso, drip, and immersion brewers pass water through coffee differently. A grind that works in one setup can flow too quickly, drain too slowly, or leave more sediment in another. Equipment settings and your preferred recipe matter, so start with the brewer manufacturer's guidance and adjust one variable at a time.
Sample packs arrive ground for drip brewing
Our Best Sellers Sample Pack and Single Origin Sample Pack each contain six 2 oz ground samples. These packs offer Standard only; they are not whole-bean or espresso-ground samplers.
They are an easy way to compare coffees in a drip brewer. If your goal is to dial in an espresso machine, choose a full-size coffee with Whole Bean or Espresso available instead.
Capsules are a separate format
Our 12-pack and 60-pack coffee capsules are single-serve products. They are not bags of loose drip grounds. Check brewer compatibility before ordering; contact us if you are unsure which machine they fit.
Choose a coffee, then choose its grind
Start with 6 Bean Blend for a chocolate-forward dark roast, Cowboy Blend for a medium-and-dark blend, or Breakfast Blend for a balanced medium roast. Read our three-coffee comparison if you are still deciding.
